We mentioned this offer in our most recent newsletter and 20 Ottobre subscribers entered to win. In order to select the winner, we gave each entrant a number based on the order they entered the give-away. Hey, crewel friends! I'm doing a crewel embroidery workshop on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11am - 1pm at Oil and Cotton in Dallas. All skill levels are welcome to attend. I'll go over crewel embroidery basics and teach eight crewel stitches and finishing techniques. Mohair Embroidery Thread

We now have some mohair embroidery thread in our inventory. Our current supply is limited, but we plan to add more as the demand for it increases. It is made in Australia by Kacoonda.
It feels sooooo soft to the touch as you embroider with it. If you have never used mohair embroidery thread, please send a self-addressed envelope and I'll send you a sample.

Kacoonda produces hand-dyed variegated embroidery threads (wool and mohair) and ribbons, as well as, wool felt using only the best of natural fibers. Their threads and ribbons are hand-dyed in their own unique color range to produce exquisite embroidery products that will inspire and delight.

'Warm Wishes' Scarf in Inspirations 72

Someone called here yesterday wanting to make the embroidered scarf on page 60 of the current (#72) issue of Inspirations. The pattern calls for navy blue linen, but she wanted to use wool. We don't normally have wool flannel in navy, but we do now. We only have a small amount left (about 2 yards) and it works really well for this pattern. If you are interested in making this design in wool rather than linen, let us know. It only requires about three-quarters of a yard.

New Wool Felt Project

I've been experimenting with some new project ideas using our very versatile wool felt. Here's the first one using a piece of our red felt .....it's a coaster that comes up around the base of the glass

To make this, thoroughly soak a piece of wool felt somewhat larger than the base of the glass. Then, with the glass upside down, put the wet felt on the base - pulling and stretching the felt until it forms to the base with no wrinkles or folds. Put a rubber band around the base to hold it firmly in place. Let it thoroughly dry and remove the rubber band. When the felt is dry, it will maintain its new shape. Cut the excess away by trimming around the line where the rubber band was. That's all there is to it - a quick and simple way to have a festive look this time of year and it's a great way to use those extra scraps of felt.

Sweet Baby Jane

"Sweet Baby Jane" by Gail Doane is the 3-piece outfit featured in the current issue of Inspirations magazine - issue #71. Rarely does this magazine include patterns for children's outfits, but it does in this case. The pattern is for children's sizes 1 - 4 and includes the hat, top, and capri-length pants.

This is also the issue focusing on Japanese embroidery with a story about "The Festival of the Broken Needle" that I mentioned in a previous post.

Appleton Dilemma

We have been having a terrible time getting the Appleton colors we need recently. I finally tracked down the problem. It seems that the man who oversees the Appleton dying process died, so there was a break in production. They even closed down production for a short time. They are back at work now, but very backlogged - or so I've been told.
Some colors have been sold out for months. I've been ordering from anywhere I can find so that your orders can be filled.
I've exhausted all US suppliers and have now placed an order from England. It ends up costing more than I charge you, so I needed to find another solution..........and I did.
I'm now ordering the colors we need in hanks and breaking them down into skeins myself. It is very laborious and time consuming, but it will enable me to get you the colors you need for your projects, especially the new Talliaferro designs. Some of the colors needed for that project have also sold out throughout the US.
Your orders may arrive later than expected, but you will get all the colors you need for your projects. The packaging will be a little differnt, but the thread is the same.

We won't be ordering for re-sale, since the exchange rate, shipping charges, and profit margin just don't make it feasible, but we have arranged with the mill in Australia to connect you directly to them so you can get the best price if you want to buy wool blanketing fabric.
They sent us samples to show you if you are interested. Inspirations 34

Remember these back issues from 2002 and 2003? Issue 34 has the little mice eating the apple core on a wool blanket and the little girl with the 'dalmation' coat.
Issue 39 has the 10-page embroidered book about the little mouse entitled: "Des Fleurs pour Grandmere".
Of course, both issues have lots of other projects, but these are the ones I remember best from when these magazines were first released.
We managed to get just a few copies of both. They sell for $14 each which includes the postage. They won't be on our website, but if they aren't taken in the next few days, I'll post them on Ebay. Be sure to let us know if you want one.

Australian Wool Blanket Fabric

We've been working with a woolen mill in Australia trying to work out some sort of arrangement so we could import the Australian wool blanketing in order to make it available to you. Unfortunately, it just isn't going to work out for us to do that, primarily due to the very high shipping rates. For the quantity we were ordering it would have been more than $25 a yard just for postage.

However..........there is some good news here. Although this is a wholesale company, we've arranged for you to be able to order from them directly, since we couldn't make this deal work out any other way. You can now order wool blanket fabrics from this mill directly. They are the ones who make most of the wool fabrics for Inspirations magazine. They have the cashmere velour, the colored blanketing so often seen in the magazine and a variety of other wool fabrics.

New Year - New Product

Tomorrow the new year begins and our newsletter goes out introducing our newest product. There will be more details in the newsletter, but for you blog readers, you get an early peek.

Our newest inventory item is a heat pack.

It is about 16" long and 4" wide with a handle on each end. The covering is cotton, but we've added a removable wool flannel sleeve to help keep the warmth in the pack and give it a softer feel. It can used either way - with or without the wool flannel sleeve. Just put it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and it's ready to use.

As an added bonus, these packs can also be used as a cold compress - just put it in the freezer or refrigerator rather than the microwave.

Crewel Ornaments

Here's a new idea for something you can do with the Wool and Hoop kits we carry. The finished designs are about 3" x 3" - just the perfect size for an ornament. Any of the designs can be made into an ornament. Here's just one.

Felted Wool Dryer Balls

This is another of our newest 'finds'. Felt wool dryer balls are a replacement for commercial dryer sheets and/or fabric softeners. They are a great all natural alternative to these two additivies. They reduce static, lessen drying time, and fluff your clothing. Simply toss them into your dryer with your damp laundry and turn it on.

We have them in kit form so you can make them yourself or in 'ready to go' packs. Both options are on our website. Just so you know........... I make them myself right here at The Wooly Thread.

They can also be embellished with embroidery or needle felting. They are about the size of a tennis ball.

Transfer-eze

We recently discovered the best product for transfering designs to your sewing/embroidery project. It works on heavy wool fabrics and dark colored fabrics. It's always been tough transfering designs, but this really works great. What I like best is that you can run this paper right through you printer, so anything on your computer can be printed right on to the transfer paper and then placed on your project. You then sew/embroider right through the paper. When finished soak it in color water and the paper 'melts' away. We've only had this a short time, and already had to re-order. Our packet of 10 sheets (8" x 11") is $15.

Felted Wool Ornaments

Here are a couple of felted wool ornaments I recently made. The smaller ones are wet felted wool dipped in a food coloring and water solution. This a great projects to do with children since no needles are used.

The larger ornament is also wet felted but then some our wool felt and Appleton crewel wool has been needle felted to the wet felted ball. The decorative possibilities are endless.
